MEMORIAL DAY

 Introduction and Origin –

 Memorial Day is Federal holiday in America, observed on the last Monday of May. It is celebrated to honour the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.  It was originally known as Decoration Day because Americans decorate the graves of the fallen soldiers with flowers and American flags. It originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. The Memorial Day remembrance was first observed on 30th May 1868. From then henceforth, the day was continually observed on May 30th until 1968 when the Uniforms Holiday Bill declared the official day as the last Monday in May.

 

Way of celebration –

Americans visit the national cemeteries where they lay flowers and flags on the graves. It is also a tradition to host the flag. Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Many people choose to hold picnics, sports events and family gatherings on this weekend. This day is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season for cultural event.

Visit a local Veteran’s cemetery or war memorial

Kids in sings” America the Beautiful” the National Anthem or say the Pledge of Allegiance, and talk about the meaning behind each one.

Family Day

  Introduction and Origin- Family day is celebrated on the third Monday of every February and was first celebrated in 1990. It took nearly two decades for other provinces began to create the holiday known as Family Day. Alberta was the only province to have a statutory holiday in February until Saskatchewan began observing it on 2007. The holiday was proclaimed by Lieutenant Governor Helen Hunley, on the advice of her premier, Don Getty. Premier Getty said it was important for Albertans to spend time with their families and this holiday would emphasize the importance of family values. Getty faced considerable criticism at the time many employers felt that an additional statutory holiday was an unnecessary financial burden. BOXING DAY

Introduction and origin – Boxing Day is celebrated on 26 th of December, the holiday after Christmas day. It started in mid 19 th century and was originally a holiday when the poor people and servants received gifts. Employers often gave the day off to their service employees, while also providing bonus pay. The name “boxing day” has nothing to do with the Boxing Sport and the origin of the holiday’s name is uncertain. It may be from the boxes of gifts, employers gave to their service employees, or from the Alum boxes churches used to collect donations for the poor.
